Maruti Smart Hybrid start-stop stops working: the ₹7,000 battery fix owners try
Owners of Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6, Brezza and Fronx mild hybrids report the idle start-stop function going dead, and Maruti's own pages show why the cheap 12V battery and even the key fob cell are worth checking before anyone talks about the lithium-ion pack.

Maruti Suzuki BrezzaOne of the longest running owner grumbles in the Indian market is Maruti's Smart Hybrid system, specifically what happens when the engine stops cutting out at traffic lights. A search of Team-BHP throws up more than one long running thread on the Smart Hybrid lithium-ion battery and a separate multi-page thread on finding a replacement battery for SHVS cars, plus a thread whose title alone points at the key fob battery affecting idling start-stop. Those forum pages would not load for us, so we are not citing them and we are not quoting them. What the search previews show is owners discussing roughly ₹60,000 to ₹65,000 for the lithium-ion pack. Treat that as a preview, not a confirmed dealer price.
The useful part is what the cheap end of the diagnosis looks like, and Maruti itself has published enough to work with.
Two batteries, and only one of them is expensive
Maruti's own Smart Hybrid pages are clear that this is not one battery. The Integrated Starter Generator, or ISG, replaces the conventional starter motor and alternator, recovers braking energy and stores it in what Maruti calls a dual battery setup, described on its Arena World page as a lithium-ion battery and a lead-acid battery. Maruti lists Smart Hybrid on the Ertiga and Brezza at Arena, and on the Ciaz, XL6, Grand Vitara and Fronx at Nexa.
That matters because the lead-acid battery is the ordinary, replaceable one. Maruti also publishes the conditions the system needs before it will shut the engine off at all: "optimal charge in battery, fastened seat belt and closed driver's door, car at standstill, in neutral with clutch released". Three of those five are free to check in the driveway. A seat belt not clicked in, a door not fully shut, or a battery that has been sitting at a low state of charge after weeks of short runs will all leave the function switched off with nothing actually broken.

Retail listings for these cars are for ISS-specific batteries, not any random unit. A listing for the S-Cross Smart Hybrid shows three ISS-marked options from ₹7,149 to ₹8,949, with 48 to 60 month warranties. That is the order of money involved if a weak 12V battery is the reason the system has gone quiet.
What Maruti has owned up to, and what the warranty leaves out
There is an official side here. In December 2019 Maruti recalled 63,493 petrol Smart Hybrid Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6 cars built between 1 January 2019 and 21 November 2019 to inspect the Motor Generator Unit, after a possible manufacturing defect at an overseas supplier. Cars needing the part got it free, and Maruti asked owners to check their chassis number in the Important Customer Info section of its site.

The warranty side is where owners should read the small print. Maruti's standard cover is 36 months or 1,00,000 km, extendable to the 6th year or 1,60,000 km. But the Service Activated Power Plus warranty page lists "Lithium-ion battery and Motor Generator Unit (MGU) for petrol vehicles" among its exclusions, alongside the battery as a wear item. In other words, the two costliest parts of this system are the ones the paid extension does not promise to cover.

What to do before you agree to a big bill
Check the simple things first: seat belt, driver's door, and the key fob cell if the car is showing a fob battery warning. Then get the 12V battery load tested and ask for the printed result, not a verbal verdict. Before paying for a lithium-ion pack or an ISG, ask the service advisor to show you the stored fault code and the measured state of health, in writing on the job card. Ask separately for a chassis number check against open recalls and service campaigns. If a dealer will not put the diagnosis on paper, escalate to Maruti Suzuki customer care using the number in your owner's manual, and then to the National Consumer Helpline.
Smart Hybrid owners in the club: did a new 12V battery bring your start-stop back, or did the dealer go straight to the lithium pack, and what did it cost?
