Maruti Jimny owners keep reporting a steering wobble under braking: what Maruti's service bulletin covers

Jimny owners in India and abroad describe the steering shaking when they brake from about 80kph, and Maruti's answer is a free king pin and brake disc replacement that is a service bulletin, not a recall.

Maruti Jimny owners keep reporting a steering wobble under braking: what Maruti's service bulletin coversMaruti Suzuki Jimny

Of all the complaints that follow a solid front axle around, this is the oldest one. Jimny owners describe braking from highway speed and feeling the steering wheel shake hard, then settle as the speed drops. Owners call it the death wobble. In India it has a formal answer from Maruti Suzuki, and it is worth knowing exactly what that answer covers before you walk into a service centre.

What owners describe, and where

Autocar India reported in December 2024 that multiple Jimny owners had reported the steering vibrating and wobbling when the brakes are applied at speeds of around 80kph, with the shake disappearing below 60kph. It said the problem was mainly reported on units that had run less than 5,000km, though some higher mileage cars were affected too.

This is not only an Indian complaint. The BigJimny forum in the UK has run a dedicated death wobble thread since November 2013 that stretches across at least 15 pages, where owners describe anything from a slight shake to a violent steering wheel shake felt through the whole vehicle, usually around 45mph. A separate thread there from July 2025 has an owner reporting that after replacing king pins, wheel bearings and seals, the vibration moved from a 65 to 75kph band to an 80 to 90kph band, with other members pointing at wheel imbalance, tie rod ends, panhard and radius arm bushes. Search results also show long-running threads on Team-BHP and on South Africa's 4x4Community, which did not open for us, so we are not quoting them.

BigJimny's own technical wiki calls the wobble quite common on the third-generation Jimny and expects the same on the fourth, and puts worn king pin bearings at the top of the cause list, with unbalanced wheels, warped road wheels, tyre pressure differences and warped brake discs behind it. The wiki notes Suzuki introduced shims to raise king pin bearing preload, and revised radius arm bushes around 2007 to 2008 under part number 46213-76J00.

The maker's side

Maruti Suzuki has not recalled the Jimny for this. What exists is a service bulletin, reported by Autocar India and Rushlane in December 2024, under which the king pin assembly and, if needed, the front brake discs are replaced free of cost under warranty at Nexa service centres. Maruti's reading, as reported, is that a faulty king pin assembly creates a dynamic imbalance that loads the front discs and wears them prematurely, which is why the vibration shows up under braking.

Two conditions matter. Rushlane reported that only cars actually showing the wobble qualify, and that the car must be on the stock 195/80 R15 tyres, so lifted or oversized-tyre builds are out. Service centres document the test drive and diagnosis on video. Suzuki's formal recalls on the Jimny abroad have been for other faults: CarExpert reported in March 2024 that Suzuki Australia recalled 726 Jimnys from 2018 to 2019 over a fuel pump impeller that could swell and stop the pump.

What an owner can do now

Log it as a complaint, not a conversation. Ask the service advisor to come along on a test drive, reproduce the wobble under braking from about 80kph, and get it written on the job card with the video reference. Ask specifically whether your VIN falls under the king pin service bulletin and whether the front discs are being replaced or only skimmed. Keep the stock tyres on the car for that visit, and have tyre pressures and wheel balancing checked first, since the BigJimny checklist puts those ahead of parts replacement. If a dealer refuses, escalate to Maruti Suzuki customer care in writing, then to the National Consumer Helpline, keeping every job card.

Jimny owners in the club: did the king pin replacement hold for you, or did the wobble come back at a different speed?
