Kia Sonet diesel DPF warnings keep coming back: Kurnool commission orders Kia to refund ₹10.99 lakh

A district consumer commission has ordered Kia India and its Kurnool dealer to refund a Sonet HTX diesel after DPF warnings returned despite more than fifteen workshop visits, and complaint boards show the same pattern across other diesel models.

Owners of BS6 diesels in India have been reporting the same thing for about four years now. The cluster asks for diesel filter regeneration, the workshop resets or regenerates it, and a few weeks later the message is back. One Kia Sonet owner in Kurnool took that loop to a consumer commission and won.

What the Kurnool order says

As reported by LiveLaw, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission at Kurnool decided Consumer Complaint No. 48 of 2026 on 25 September 2026. The car was a Kia Sonet HTX diesel bought in March 2022 for about ₹13.69 lakh on road. LiveLaw's report says the first diesel filter regeneration request appeared at 364 km and that the owner documented more than fifteen service visits, with the workshop trying DPF regeneration, sensor replacement, battery replacement, DPF and fuel injector refurbishment and ECM software upgrades. The warnings kept returning inside the warranty period.

Kia India and the dealer argued that regeneration alerts are normal behaviour on a BS6 diesel and depend on driving pattern, city traffic and fuel quality, and they pointed to rat bite damage to sensor wiring and injector back leakage as outside causes. Deccan Chronicle reports the same defence, including short distance driving and the owner not following the regeneration procedure.

The commission held that a manufacturing defect was not conclusively proved, but that failing to give a durable fix during the warranty period was a deficiency in service. It ordered a refund of the ex-showroom price of ₹10,99,890 with 9 per cent interest from 25 February 2026, ₹1,00,000 for mental agony and ₹10,000 costs, to be paid in 45 days.

The same complaint, other badges

This is not one angry car. A search of ConsumerComplaints.in for "DPF" returns 39 complaint listings, against Mahindra, Toyota, Tata Motors and Hyundai among others. The newest on the first page is dated 11 December 2025.

We opened two. A Toyota Innova Crysta owner, complaint dated 1 September 2022, reported repeated DPF full warnings on a car about 20 months old that had done 1,180 km, with the service centre resetting it in software and then quoting ₹1,50,000 for the injection system and ₹60,000 for the filter, later offering a 25 per cent discount. A Mahindra XUV300 W8 (O) owner, complaint dated 3 March 2023, reported a DPF clogged warning within about 500 km and a sensor replacement, and was told to drive above 60 kmph and take a weekly highway run, which did not suit a city commute. Both are listed as unresolved. Team-BHP pages would not open for us, though search results show a Sonet owner's DPF account built around short school and office runs.

We found no recall or service campaign in India covering the DPF on these models. The official line is the owner's manual. Kia's India manual page for self regeneration tells owners to park safely, keep fuel above one fifth of the tank, open the bonnet, hold the OK button and wait around 30 to 60 minutes, or instead drive for about 30 minutes above 60 kmph at around 2,000 rpm, and to see a Kia workshop if the light starts blinking.

What an owner should do now

Keep every job card, with the complaint, the reading and the part changed written on it, because that paper trail is what carried the Kurnool case. Ask the dealer in writing whether the DPF, sensors and injectors are covered under warranty and what the diagnosis is, not just the reset. Run the manual's regeneration routine before the light starts blinking. If the same fault returns, escalate to the maker's customer care, then the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or consumerhelpline.gov.in, and file at your district commission through e-Daakhil if it stays unfixed.

Sonet and Seltos diesel owners, how often does your car ask for regeneration, and what has your workshop actually done about it?
