How you get a place on a factory adventure ride: GS Trophy, Himalayan Odyssey and KTM Adventure Rally explained
Three of the biggest OEM rider programmes use three different doors, one you pay to walk through, one you have to earn in a qualifier, and one that fills up before most riders hear about it.

KTM 390 AdventureThe short answer is that there is no single system. Royal Enfield's Odysseys and KTM's Adventure Rally are paid registrations with a documents and fitness screen. BMW's International GS Trophy is a competition you have to win your way into, and you cannot buy a seat at any price. Working out which model you are dealing with changes how you plan your year.
Pay and register: Royal Enfield and KTM
The Himalayan Odyssey is the cheapest way into a big supported Himalayan ride, and for 2026 it split into four circuits. The Original ran 25 June to 10 July 2026, 16 days and 2,400 km, starting and finishing in Chandigarh, at ₹90,000 for an individual and ₹1,80,000 for a couple. You bring your own Royal Enfield and it goes through a scrutiny check before departure. Riders pick between Team Baralacha La and Team Shinku La for the climb out of Lahaul, then the two groups converge for Ladakh and Zanskar.
The Explore circuit matters for anyone without a suitable bike. It ran 26 June to 5 July, covered 1,200 km and cost ₹85,000 with a Himalayan 450 included. Royal Enfield pitches it at intermediate riders and is upfront that support is minimal, with participants carrying their own luggage.

KTM's first Adventure Rally in India, 27 February to 3 March 2026 in Goa, shows the other side of the paid model. The route is a 50-50 split of tarmac and off-road. The entry pack is a real checklist: a valid licence for geared motorcycles, comprehensive insurance with a high-risk endorsement, PUC, an adventure riding medical fitness certificate listing any pre-existing conditions, personal high-risk mediclaim of at least ₹5 lakh, Aadhaar, two passport photographs, and an NOC from the owner if the bike is not yours. KTM also makes its certified pre-rally preparation mandatory before your place is confirmed, so paying is not the last step. The 2026 edition is listed as sold out, which is the real barrier on these rides.
Earn it: the GS Trophy route
The GS Trophy works nothing like that. For the 2026 edition in Romania, 15 national teams were selected, nine men's teams and six women's teams, through eight national qualifying events plus an international qualifier at the BMW Motorrad Enduro Park in October 2025. India was one of the qualifying countries. Riders are tested on GPS navigation, off-road special stages and technical tests, and BMW is clear that the finals are not a race but a mix of riding and non-riding team challenges. The 2026 competition bike was the R 12 G/S.

The Indian qualifier has followed a consistent shape. For the 2024 Trophy in Namibia, registration was open to male and female BMW GS owners in India, with regional rounds in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi where riders competed on their own GS machines. Regional winners went to a national final on R 1250 GS bikes supplied by BMW Motorrad India, and the top three formed Team India, with riding gear and a personalised GS waiting at the event. The practical takeaway is that you need to already own a GS and already ride it off-road competently, because the qualifier is scored.
What the money actually buys
Overseas OEM rides are a different budget entirely. Royal Enfield's Moroccan Odyssey 2026 ran 25 September to 6 October, 12 days and 11 nights from Marrakesh to Rabat, at ₹2,50,000 for a single registration. That includes the Himalayan 450, accommodation, most meals, airport transfers, guided cultural tours and side activities such as quad biking and sand boarding, but flights and visa are yours to arrange.

Read the inclusions line by line before you compare prices. A supported Odyssey fee covers backup vehicles, medical support and permits for restricted areas, which is most of what makes a Ladakh ride safe. A self-supported circuit costs less because that backup is thinner. Neither covers your fuel on every ride, your gear, or your own medical insurance, and the KTM document list is a useful reminder that high-risk cover is now treated as basic kit, not an extra.

Interesting how KTM's checklist is basically insurance + medical fitness, not skill. Makes me wonder if any OEM will ever run something like this for EVs, range planning on an S1 Pro would need a totally different qualifier than fuel bikes. For now I'll just keep watching these threads from the sidelines on my scooter.
