Harley-Davidson X440 owners report delivery delays and warranty gaps
Team-BHP threads describe delivery delays and a warranty that covers less than buyers expect on the Hero-built Harley-Davidson X440, while a US regulator's order against Harley-Davidson shows how far a maker can go in tying warranty cover to its own parts.

Harley-Davidson Softail StandardOwners describe a bumpy start on Team-BHP
The Harley-Davidson X440, built by Hero MotoCorp under license and sold through both standalone Harley-Davidson stores and Hero dealerships, drew more than 25,500 bookings within a month of its July 2023 launch, a volume so large that Hero stopped taking new orders, according to a report that cited the company's own figures. Hero MotoCorp's chief executive said at the time that deliveries would be completed over the following 4 to 5 months as supply ramped up.
Search results show several separate Team-BHP threads from that delivery window describing a rougher experience than that timeline promised. Threads carry titles such as one calling the booking process "a nightmare" and another, more pointed, titled "Paid for Harley, Got Hero." The threads, as search snippets of them show, describe showroom visits where the promised bike was not in stock, deliveries pushed back more than once, accessories arriving weeks after the bike itself, and in at least one case a fall detection sensor that needed seven days to arrive from the factory. We were not able to open the Team-BHP pages themselves to confirm reply counts or exact dates, so this account relies only on what search results show of them, and none of it should be read as more than individual reports.
What the standard warranty actually covers
A pattern that recurs in the same threads concerns the warranty itself. Multiple posts describe Harley-Davidson India's standard two year warranty as covering the engine but not the gearbox, electricals or sensors in full, with an extended warranty, underwritten by ICICI Lombard and costing roughly ₹9,000 by some owners' accounts, needed to cover the rest for up to two more years. Owners are told the extended cover is only honoured if every service is done on schedule at an authorised Harley or Hero dealer.
A regulator's answer, from a different market
India has no equivalent ruling on record for this bike, but the United States has one for Harley-Davidson globally. The Federal Trade Commission found the company's warranty language implied cover would be void if a customer used an independent mechanic or non-Harley parts, a breach of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act's ban on tying a warranty to the seller's own parts. Wisconsin and California owners filed right to repair class actions in August 2022, the FTC's final order followed in October 2022, and a third antitrust class action over the same tying claims was filed in Chicago that November.
Harley-Davidson's warranty booklets now carry language such as "using non-genuine Harley-Davidson parts alone will not void this warranty," language that extends to current Softail models, though the company keeps the right to refuse a claim if a modified part is shown to have caused the failure itself. Indian owners of the X440 face a different, narrower question, since the dispute here is less about parts tying and more about what the standard contract leaves out from the start.
What an X440 owner can do
Ask the dealer in writing, before paying, exactly which components the standard two year warranty excludes, and get the extended warranty's ₹9,000 range cost and ICICI Lombard terms on the booking slip, not a verbal promise. Keep every service bill, since a missed or late service is the usual ground cited for rejecting an extended warranty claim. If a dealer delays delivery well past the date in the booking confirmation, or a warranty claim is refused without a written reason, escalate to Harley-Davidson India's customer care line, 1-800-103-8903, and if that fails, to the National Consumer Helpline or a district consumer court under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
