Car AC not cooling: the fixes owners report, and what each job costs
Complaint boards carry dozens of car AC grievances across Hyundai, Maruti, Tata and Toyota, and the job that actually holds is a leak repair with a condenser clean rather than one more gas top-up, going by what the makers' own service pages say.

Fiat LineaWeak cooling is the complaint that never goes out of season in India. It is also the one where the bill swings the most, from a few hundred rupees for a cabin filter to tens of thousands for a compressor. The gap between those two numbers is where owners get stuck.
What the complaint boards show
A search on ConsumerComplaints.in for car AC not cooling and compressor returns 58 matching complaints. A narrower search for AC compressor, car, warranty and cost returns 21. Reading the listings, the same shapes repeat across makers: cooling that faded on a three year old Creta, a compressor called faulty on an i10, an AC that stopped working on a Grand i10, a Fiat Linea with a cooling problem, an Altis with no cooling, and several complaints against workshop chains blaming the service itself for a spoilt AC. One entry against Honda is titled around a compressor being replaced because of an O ring, which is the fear owners keep raising, that a small leak gets billed as a big part.
These are owners' own accounts, not verified faults, and many of the entries are years old. Search results also show long running Team-BHP threads on AC servicing and compressor failures, but those pages would not open for us, so we are not leaning on them here.

The two jobs that usually fix it
Maruti Suzuki's own Arena car care page is unusually direct about the cause. It says AC gas reduces over time because of "leakage from the joints, o-rings etc. If they were not properly tightened during service", and that an owner whose cooling is unsatisfactory should get the gas leak checked rather than guess. It also advises getting the AC serviced every year, around February to March, before the heat arrives. The same page explains the condenser's job, which is the part sitting behind the front grille that gets choked with dust and bugs in Indian traffic.
A 2020 explainer by the Indian car site MyCarHelpline lists what each step cost then: AC servicing with gas refill and component cleaning at ₹2,500 to ₹3,000, compressor oil at ₹600 to ₹800, a slipping or noisy AC belt and bearing at ₹500 to ₹700, a cabin pollen filter at ₹350 to ₹600, and an evaporator coil replacement at ₹5,000 to ₹6,000. It also says condenser cleaning and a filter change cost next to nothing, and warns against treating every weak AC as low gas.
What the dealer charges, and when to go there
Hyundai ran a nationwide AC Checkup camp from April 10 to 18, 2026, with a free 30 point check, 15 per cent off AC servicing including gas refill, and 10 per cent off the compressor, condenser and cooling coil. Hyundai's value added services page lists an AC disinfectant at ₹699 and an evaporator cleaner at ₹2,199, prices that apply across segments with GST extra. Maruti's accessory listing for 340 g of AC gas is ₹699, with the note that refilling must be done "by a qualified technician only".
- AC disinfectant₹699Prices listed for all car segments, GST extra
- Evaporator cleaner₹2,199These are optional value added services, not part of the standard AC repair
- Throttle body cleaner (petrol)₹499
- EGR cleaner (diesel)₹999

Do the free part yourself. Hose the grille and condenser gently when you wash the car, change the cabin filter, and check that the radiator fan spins when the AC is on. Leave the sealed side alone. Maruti's point about instruments is the practical line: pressure testing and recovery need dealer equipment.
If a second top-up is proposed within a year, ask for a leak test report before approving any part, and ask for the compressor's failure cause in writing on the job card. Inside warranty, insist the claim is filed and keep every invoice. If it stalls, escalate to the maker's customer care, then the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or its WhatsApp line on +91 88000 01915, which also takes complaints through the NCH and UMANG apps.
Owners, what finally fixed your AC, and what did the dealer bill you? Post your job card figures in the club thread.
