BMW N20 owners keep asking when the timing chain will fail: what the US settlement covers, and what it means for India's 328i
A decade of BMW forum threads ask the same thing about the N20 petrol four, and the best-supported answer comes from a US court settlement, NHTSA's complaint file and the physics of a plastic chain guide.

BMW 3 SeriesA used F30-generation BMW 328i is affordable money in India today. The first thing a careful buyer is told to ask about is the timing chain. That same question has been running on BMW owner forums for more than a decade, and it is still being asked.
The question that will not go away on Bimmerpost
Bimmerpost's pages would not open for me, so what follows is based only on what the search results themselves show. Across Bimmerpost's F30/F32 section and its X3 section, search results list at least a dozen separate threads on the N20 timing chain. They include a running "N20 / N26 Timing Chain Failure Log" whose result title shows a 16th page, a "Timing Chain. Preventative Replacement Costs" thread showing a sixth page, and threads titled "N20 timing chain preventative maintenance", "N20 timing chain issues?" and "N20/26 Timing Chain Class-Action". Two more sit on Bimmerfest, including a do-it-yourself guide for the 328i xDrive. I could not read the posts, so I am not quoting owners, counting replies or giving dates.
The question in all of them is the same. When does it go, and should it be replaced before it does?
What the fault is, and what BMW and a US court did
Wikipedia's entry on the N20 says thousands of early production engines were built with faulty internal plastic timing chain guides that deteriorate with little or no warning, letting the chain go slack and skip teeth, which wrecks the engine. The N20B20 in its 180 kW form powered the 328i, 528i, X1 and X3 28i, Z4 sDrive28i and others, built from 2011 to 2017.
Independent BMW specialist Motronix lists the warning signs as a high-pitched whine or whirr from the front of the engine, most noticeable between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, rattle on cold start, chain slap, camshaft to crankshaft correlation fault codes, rough idle and metal shavings in the oil. The proper fix is the whole cassette: primary chain, oil pump chain, every plastic guide, the hydraulic tensioner and the sprockets, which the shop puts at 10 to 15 hours of labour. Its view on prevention is blunt. Servicing cannot stop a material defect, but short oil change intervals and listening for new noises are the best early warning.
On the official side, BMW of North America had already extended the chain warranty to 7 years or 70,000 miles. CarComplaints reports that a US federal judge gave final approval to a class action settlement on 28 February 2021 covering nine 2012 to 2015 models with the N20 and N26 engines, including the 320i, 328i, 528i, X1, X3, X4, Z4, 228i and 428i. It stretches cover to 8 years or 100,000 miles on a sliding scale.
The regulator's file backs up why owners keep asking. NHTSA's complaints database returns 288 complaints for the 2013 BMW 328i alone, and 27 of those complaint summaries mention the timing chain.

What this means for an Indian owner
India got this engine. CarWale reported the F30 3 Series launch on 27 July 2012, assembled at BMW's Chennai plant, with four diesel variants and a single petrol, the 328i Sport Line at ₹37.9 lakh ex-showroom. Those cars are now in their thirteenth and fourteenth years.
The warranty extension and the settlement applied to cars sold or leased in the United States and Puerto Rico. I found no equivalent BMW India programme and no Indian recall on this, so an Indian owner is paying the full bill.
Before you buy one, start it stone cold and listen, hold 1,500 to 2,500 rpm and listen again, scan for correlation codes, and cut open the oil filter or check the drain magnet for plastic and metal. Ask the seller and the dealer whether the chain cassette has ever been replaced and under which part number, and get the answer in writing on the job card. If a car is still under BMW India warranty or a Repair Inclusive plan, ask for the claim decision in writing before any work starts. If a dealer refuses a covered repair, escalate to BMW India customer care and then to the National Consumer Helpline.
Owners of F30 328is and other N20 cars in India: has your chain been done, and what did it cost? Tell the club.

Reading this makes me glad I'm not shopping used 328i right now. Is it just me or does the settlement only cover US cars, so Indian owners get zero protection and have to DIY diagnose that whine at 1500-2500 rpm themselves? Genuinely curious how resale guys here price that risk in.
