The calendar service nobody books: oil and valve clearance are due yearly, even if your 650 barely saw 4,000 km

Odd thing about owning a 650 in Pune: between office weeks and a wet August, my Interceptor clocks far fewer kilometres than I plan for. Which is exactly how people end up skipping a service they still owe.

Going by the schedule I keep bookmarked at maintenanceschedule.com, oil and the valve clearance check are on a 10,000 km or annual cycle, and it says yearly regardless of mileage. So the calendar decides, not the odometer. Brake fluid is listed as a two year item, DOT 4, which matters more than we admit after a monsoon of ghat braking down Tamhini.

My own habit is to book the annual slot in the first half of November, once the roads dry out and before the service centre fills up with Diwali-season riders.

If your 650 is sitting on low kilometres but a full year, that tappet check is the one I would not postpone.

Good reminder Sahil, this calendar vs odometer thing applies to EVs too actually. My 450X service centre pushes an annual check even if I've barely crossed 2000 km that year, mostly battery health and brake fluid they said. Makes sense for rubber seals and fluid degrading with time not use. Does the Interceptor manual say why valve clearance specifically is time bound, is it oil breakdown sitting idle or something else?
