Kochi to Valparai through Malakkappara: the forest stretch is made for a Classic, if you leave early

I've been plotting this one again for the cool months. Out of Kochi early, breakfast near Chalakudy, then Athirappilly and the long green crawl to Malakkappara before dropping into Valparai's tea.

The forest bit is the whole point. A guide I read says the checkposts generally run 6am to 6pm and you're expected to clear roughly 45km of forest in about two hours, so this is not a stop everywhere ride (Exoticamp's route notes). Timings do change with forest department orders, so ring ahead.

November to February is my pick. Mist, no leeches, grippy tar.

On the bike, I'd fuss over tyres and a spare tube first, because tube type on spokes inside a reserve forest with no shop for 45km is the one thing that'll ruin the day. Also sort your exhaust and lights, the Kerala MVD modification drive is still active.

Who's done it recently, and how was the surface?

Joseph, good point on the tube type tyres, mine's still on the stock spoke setup. Two hours for 45km on a loaded Classic with pillion, is that realistic or are they assuming solo riding light? Also does the 6 to 6 checkpost timing mean you must enter by 6am sharp or just be out before 6pm?
